All art tells a story. Sometimes, you readily understand the story, its beauty, and grace, or its darkness and density. At other times, art is elusive, and you find yourself scratching your head a bit, wondering what the artist intended. But all art pieces share this one beautiful thing: feeling. Whether you love or hate it, all art you view gives you a feeling.
For me, making art is communicating a story so you can feel it.
My artistic practice revolves around creating mixed media works that seek to answer several questions regarding "The Myth of Women.” I delve into themes of power, vulnerability, and the search for identity within a patriarchal society, trying to answer the question: are we what is projected onto us?
Beyond the canvas, my artistic expression extends to large-scale, interactive art installations created for the celebrations of San Antonio's MuretosFest Day of the Dead. These immersive experiences allow me to engage with the community and foster dialogue and reflection on themes of mortality and remembrance.
Ultimately, I aim to create intellectually stimulating and emotionally moving art that prompts viewers to reflect on their journeys of self-discovery and transformation.
And I hope I do it with enormous amounts of glitter and color!
Kara Ritthaler is a mixed-media artist/acrylic painter with a love for making large-scale, interactive art installations in magical San Antonio, Texas. She grew up in a very small town south of San Antonio before studying Theatre Arts at Incarnate Word University, and then graduating Texas State with a BFA in Theatre Production. She took time out to raise a family (5 kids!!) but always managed to paint or sketch.
She uses a layered, textual approach to her work and incorporates found items into the ideas she is painting. She is currently working on a series of paintings that deal with myths, women and societal expectations. When she isn't painting, she is working to produce events with local charities.
She can usually be found at her art studio at Hausmann Millworks, or if she isn't there with her nose buried in a book, or mostly likely, taking her very fluffy dog Oreo out on a walk.
